L1 PREMIUM GOODS x WANG LEI
L1 Premium Goods, the US based premium snowboard outerwear and gear company spearheaded by major creative whizz Jon Kooley collaborated with Chinese Snowboard Legend Wang Lei on a signature colorway combo. Wang Lei, who rides for L1 since 2016, came up with an an exclusive lining reflecting his Chinese heritage:
Infusing Contemporary Outerwear With Chinese Ancient Art
Attracting a closer look to what’s inside, L1 Premium Goods offers a signature colorway with an especially designed lining by global team rider Wang Lei.
The outerwear lining is inspired by the “Drawing Life” style, vividly interpreted by scholars of ancient China. The “Study of Wonderful Birds and Other Living creatures”, an ink and color painting on silk created 940AD by Huang Quan, the head of the Imperial Painting Academy in Shu (Sichuan), exemplifies this modern take on an up close, realistic look on nature. It is said that his miniatures drawn in the study set the standards for artists for centuries.
Jon Kooley, the head designer at L1 weighs in:
“The main inspiration for the 2017 line was simplicity. Making sure there was no overlap in styles, cleaning up the unnecessary features and limiting color options. Basically we are streamlining the entire line.”
The classy and rather different print that will be used in several pieces is true to L1’s new tagline: “FREEDOM IN VERSATILITY”.
Kooley is a creative forerunner and sees a lot of potential with L1 in China. Specifically with pieces like the Flint, Rockefeller, Stooge and Westmont that serve a dual purpose. Outerwear that takes the riders from street to mountain with ease, and without looking as if you just got off the hill is a key trend.
Reflecting Chinese Heritage
Wang Lei says: “I am so excited about my first outerwear collaboration with L1. The brand’s design aesthetics match what I am looking for in outerwear design, and the people who are behind L1 are some of the best in the industry. I am stoked to be a part of this, and I am proud of the wealth of the Chinese culture that stands as reference for this particular print.”
